Driver Instructor Training

DriverIf you are interested in a different career and you are a confident and experienced driver. As long as you are 21 +. You could earn up to £40K per year. We aim to recruit the best and sometimes this means sourcing people who are right for the job but need training. Its important that we only recruit those with the potential to become excellent driving instructors as our impeccable reputation rests on our team. The instructor course is a structured combination of theory based earning, one to one theory based training and on the road practical sessions. The length of the course is between 6-18 months, this time scale depends upon your learning pace and your personal commitments.

Here's What You Need to Know and Do

• You must be over 21
• Have held a full driving licence for at least 3.5 years (and have not been disqualified)
• You must have at least five hours a week to train as an instructor
• You must be able to read a number plate from 27.5m
• Have an enhanced Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check
• Have patience; some pupils learn faster than others
• Have good communication skills
• Point holders, be aware the Driving Standards Agency may reject your application


Getting Started

LearnerYou need to complete your full approved driving instructor (ADI) training. This qualification exists in 3 parts.
1. A computer based theory and hazard perception test
2. A practical driving ability test
3. A practical instruction ability test
You have two years to pass all three, you can have as many attempts as you like at the theory, but are only allowed three attempts at each practical test within those two years.


English School of Motoring Instructor Training

CarsWe want you to be an excellent driving instructor, our reputation rests on you, that's why the standards of our training are the highest. The course is a combination of home based theory learning, one to one theory based learning and on the road practical sessions. The course can take anywhere between six and eighteen months depending upon the pace at which you learn and your personal commitments. The course is supported by a range of books, CDs and audio clips. English School of Motoring are an Ordit Trainer which meets the Official Register of the Driving Standards Agency; you will only find that a limited list of companies have this additional qualification.

Breaking down the Tests


Driving Standards Agency Part 1 - Theory

This is a multiple choice question test, there are one hundred questions of which you need to get at least eighty-five correct. Minimum marks of 80% are required in the following four areas of this test:

  • Driving test, disabilities and law
  • Road procedure
  • Publication, instructional techniques
  • Car control, mechanical knowledge, traffic signs and signals, pedestrians

Hazard Perception Test

This forms the second part of the theory test. There are fourteen video clips each of which will contain at least one developing hazard. You need to get a minimum of 57 out of 75 to pass.

Driving Standards Agency Part 2 - Practical

Here your practical driving skills will be tested to the highest level required by the Driving Standards Agency, to show you have an exceptional standard of driving (no more than six minor points).

You can now apply for a trainee licence and begin teaching before you've completed the final exam and most importantly begin to earn money as a driving instructor.

Driving Standards Agency Part 3 - Instructional Ability

Part 3 is all about teaching others to drive and is a final 1 hour test with the examiner acting the role of the pupil.

Once you have passed all three tests, English School of Motoring will guarantee you a franchise position.
